Captain Rich McNevin

Embarking on my law enforcement journey in 1994, my career began humbly as a dispatcher for the West Palm Beach Police Department. The intricate world of law enforcement called, and in 1998, I answered that call by attending the police academy. March of 1999 marked a significant milestone as I joined the ranks of the Boynton Beach Police Department.

Over the years, my career within the Boynton Beach Police Department evolved through diverse roles. I served as a Traffic Homicide Reconstructionist, delving into the intricate details of accident investigation. Progressing through the ranks, I assumed roles as Road Patrol Sergeant and Traffic Sergeant, contributing to the operational efficiency of the department.

My journey reached new heights when I took on the mantle of Captain, overseeing several critical divisions within the agency. This role allowed me to blend leadership and experience, guiding teams towards excellence.

The trajectory of my career took a profound turn in 2008 when I faced a life-altering event — being shot in the line of duty. This experience not only tested my resilience but also fueled a determination to continue serving and contributing to the field of law enforcement.

In 2019, another chapter unfolded with an on-duty shooting. Navigating through these critical incidents has provided me with a unique perspective on the challenges and triumphs that define a law enforcement career.

Driven by a commitment to support my fellow officers, I’ve dedicated myself to sharing the insights gained from these experiences. My aim is to help others navigate the complexities of critical incidents that inevitably punctuate a law enforcement career.

Beyond the challenges, my journey is characterized by a steadfast dedication to the principles of justice and the betterment of our community. As I continue to serve, I look forward to contributing to the growth and resilience of law enforcement professionals, ensuring that each officer is equipped to face the dynamic challenges of our noble profession.

Detective Kyle Culver

I was privileged to serve our beautiful nation by enlisting in the Army National Guard in January 2010, where I served for (6) years as a combat Military Police Officer, and was honorably discharged in 2016. During my service, I completed (2) combat deployments to Afghanistan. My time in the Army taught me invaluable life lessons including:

  • Leadership skills
  • Camaraderie
  • Selfless service
  • Working as a member of a team for the greater good of all and not one
  • Perseverance
  • Dedication
  • Effective Communication
  • Integrity and Honor
  • Initiative
  • Problem Solving

I began my law enforcement career in 2014 with the Riviera Beach Police Department. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to serve in multiple capacities:

  • Road Patrol
  • Field Training Officer
  • Street Team / Tac Unit
  • Palm Beach County Violent Crime Task Force, Agent
  • Task Force Officer Assigned to The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit
  • Detective Assigned To Homicides, and Violent Crimes

Working in multiple capacities has allowed me to expand my knowledge and experience in a variety of skills, and allowed me to network and gain contacts in local, state, and federal agencies.

After returning from my last deployment in 2014, I experienced struggles with mental health including depression, anxiety, hyper-vigilance, guilt, loss of sleep, and more. These overwhelming obstacles finally came to a head, which forced me to make life decisions. With the support and guidance of those closest to me, I sought out help from professionals regarding my mental health. Although this decision was not easily made, it changed my life for the better.

Since then one of my greatest passions and missions in life has been to spread awareness regarding mental health, especially when dealing with PTSD and Suicide ideation. The greatest military battles in history weren’t fought and won by a single person, victory was obtained by working as a combined force. Therefore, never fight your demons alone. Reach your hand out and it will be met by many who are willing to fight alongside you!

“Never make a permanent decision for a temporary problem”

Melissa Houston

After packing up 4 children and moving across the country by myself, I had to do something to support my family.  The local police department was hiring, and a friend of mine made a bet with me that he would make it further in the hiring process than I would.  I won.

During my 21 years at the Sheriff’s Office, I held positions in the following areas:

  • Corrections-booking and housing areas
  • Road patrol
  • Detective assigned to Sex Crimes Unit
  • Field Training Officer
  • Drug Recognition Expert Instructor
  • Drug/alcohol interdiction team
  • Joint Criminal Apprehension Team
  • Undercover agent on federal task force
  • Patrol Sergeant
  • Sergeant in Judicial Services

During my career, I was the one people turned to for help in writing search warrants, giving a second set of eyes to a situation, and being the work-wife or work-mother to my coworkers.  My car always had a snack and a bottle of water for anyone in need.  I kept blankets and first aid supplies, as well as extra forms and evidence bags, to ensure everyone would always have what they needed to succeed.

I was re-married early in my career, and I had 2 more children.  I was working and raising a family alone while my husband pursued his PhD.  Everyone has unique circumstances that put pressures on their families.  How we handle these pressures will either “make or break” our relationships.  Mine broke.  Hindsight has 20/20 vision.

During my career, I was in a unique position to understand where the “cop wives’” were coming from, and I would often offer advice to my male counterparts.  I am not a licensed therapist. I am, however, a woman who can see both sides of the coin and can offer advice/ideas to help both sides flourish. My undergraduate degree was in social psychology, my Master’s degree is in Criminal Justice.
